Shaw Chuang
Executive Vice President of Engineering

Shaw Chuang is the Executive Vice President of Engineering for Virtustream responsible for driving cloud computing innovation and developing the future generation xStream software stack. Shaw has deep expertise in virtualization, cloud infrastructure and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and has led engineering and technology development at some of the industry‘s most successful companies.

Prior to Virtustream, Shaw was the chief technology officer and vice president of Emerging Technologies at PGP Corporation, a leader in the email and data encryption market that was acquired by Symantec in 2010 for $300 million. Shaw worked closely with product management to move the company into adjacent markets and position PGP for acquisition. Before that, he expanded his virtualization expertise at VMware as project director for VI3 and director of research and development, ESX. Shaw also held research positions at the University of Cambridge, Computer Laboratory, AT&T Bell Laboratories, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and University College London, C.S. Department.

Throughout his twenty year career, Shaw also founded several technology companies, guiding engineering teams through periods of hyper-growth. He founded Invenio Systems, a company that developed object-based storage systems for virtualized environments and he was the founding chief product architect at Network Clarity, an infrastructure software company with a focus on boosting reliability of large, multi-vendor IT networks in Fortune 500 companies. Shaw was also a co-founder of Gsphere, which later became Xfire and was acquired by Viacom and he was a founding engineer, manager/chief architect at Ensim Corporation, where he pioneered an early cloud operating platform.

Shaw has a PH.D in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge and was awarded the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Bursary and Overseas Research Scholarship. He currently sits on a number of technical advisory boards at companies including Pancetera, Virsto, CiiNOW and Catbord.
