Fostering a Spirit of Generosity on Giving Tuesday and Beyond

in Business, Executive, Working Here

A few months ago, I had the privilege to participate in a wish-granting event in India where 10 children with life threatening illnesses, and their families, came to the Virtustream offices in Bangalore to have their wishes granted.  Their asks were simple for us to provide – a toy car, clothes, a tablet - but yet entirely meaningful for the children and a powerful reminder of hope and support for the families.  The smiles on the children’s faces and the gratitude from the families was truly unforgettable.

It’s precisely these small moments of compassion that collectively can make a big impact in our own communities – and the world.  Giving Tuesday represents a global generosity movement striving to unleash the power of people and organizations to transform their communities – not only on Dec. 3, but every day. The movement poses a simple question for all of us: We can help others through the gift of time, donations, goods or our voices – which will you give today?

Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, the idea has grown into a global movement inspiring hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. In honor of this day, I want to thank the hundreds of Virtustream team members around the world who have made a difference in their communities this year.

Doing Good in Our Global Communities

At Virtustream, we value and nurture a spirit of compassion and giving. Through our Virtustream in Action program, we provide a platform that makes it easy for our team members to make a positive impact in the communities in which they work and live. Our charitable activities can take many forms, but they are all rooted in the belief that each of us can make a true, positive difference in someone’s life. We are proud of our team’s work to help raise nearly $150,000 for multiple causes in the past year alone, and also for the hundreds of hours dedicated to serving our communities.  Here are just a few examples:

  • United Kingdom: Our London-based team recently participated in a 45-mile charity bike ride, with all proceeds benefiting The Prince’s Trust Charity which aids 11- to 30-year-olds who are unemployed or struggling at school. The program is free and provides practical and financial support to help participants through education, skill development and motivation.
  • Ireland: Team members from our offices in Cork put their culinary skills to work to serve the Cork Penny Dinners organization, preparing and serving freshly-made meals to people in need. The team also prepared food packages, which are distributed to people throughout the city.  Cork Penny Dinners is a free service that is open every day of the year.
  • USA:  A donation drive by our team in McLean, Virginia, benefited Comfort Cases, an organization that provides essential items such as water, toiletries and food for youth entering the foster care system and support them on their journey to find a forever home.  According to Comfort Cases, more than 400,000 youth are in the foster care system in the U.S.  Unfortunately, many of these young people enter the system with little more than the clothes they are wearing, so the need for support is significant.
  • USA: Virtustream’s team in Atlanta, Georgia, participated in Lauren’s Run, a 5K charity race that benefits CURE Childhood Cancer. Money raised from the run was dedicated to assisting families in their battle with pediatric cancer as well as supporting critical research needed to make life-saving medical advancements.
  • India: In just a few months, Virtustream’s team members granted wishes for 40 children suffering from critical illnesses, doing their part to support the Make-a-Wish Foundation’s inspiring goal to grant 75,000 wishes by 2020 in India.

These are just a few of our teams’ many efforts from this past year. There are endless ways to give back, do good and support your community. Giving Tuesday is a great site to find a cause, organization or special event located near you. While this time of year is associated with joy and celebration for many of us, let’s also make it a time of personal reflection, giving and doing good for others.
